Job Description

The Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics at Northern Arizona University seeks a Research Technician to perform basic and applied research in microbial genomics. The Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics is a large (50+ employees), state-of-the-art academic research facility. Work entails DNA extraction, genomic library preparation, real-time PCR, and bioinformatic analyses.
    
Primary duties:
Work in a BSL2 environment to extract DNA from bacterial and fungal samples.
Prepare genomic libraries for Next-Generation sequencing, particularly Illumina platforms.
Initiate post-run processing of genomic data.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or related field;
OR
Four years research experience in Microbiology or related field;
OR
Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
This position requires a willingness and ability to pass a Department of Justice Select Agent Program Security Risk Assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with molecular genetic analysis techniques such as DNA extraction and purification, Polymerase Chain Reaction, agarose gel electrophoresis, fluorescent DNA sequencing and/or fragment analysis.
Experience in a BSL-2 working environment.
Experience with Real-Time PCR.
Experience with preparation of genomic DNA for Next-Generation sequencing, which includes sonication or enzymatic preparation of DNA, genomic library construction, and quality control of products.
Experience with bioinformatic processing of genomic data from next-generation sequencing instruments.
Experience in working in a BLS-3 environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.
Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses.
Ability to work well within groups.
Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

General Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position.  Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following:  a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Salary

$30,219 - $32,000 depending on experience.

FLSA Status

Non-Exempt.
