Job Description

The Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics at Northern Arizona University seeks a Research Specialist, Senior to perform basic and advanced research on bacterial pathogens, including Brucella spp., Yersinia pestis, Rickettsia spp. and Bacillus anthracis. The Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics is a large (50+ employees), state-of-the-art academic research facility. Work entails genetic and genomic analyses, microbiology, and laboratory maintenance, among other things. This position will require working in a BSL3- environment with Select Agent organisms mentioned above. Maintaining a positive attitude in a team-based workplace is essential.

Primary duties:
Work in a BSL3 environment with Select Agents to accomplish research goals.
Supervise the efforts of 1-4 junior level laboratory staff and students.
Compile and assist in writing reports, SOPs, and publications.
Participation in group and individual meetings and coordination with external collaborators.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR,
Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and four years related research experience; OR,
Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
This position requires a willingness and ability to pass a Department of Justice Select Agent Program Security Risk Assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

Currently a BSL3 certified user capable of working at Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics at Northern Arizona University.
Experience with molecular biological techniques.
Experience with genetic and genomic analyses in bacteria.
Experience with arthopod vectors including ticks, fleas, and/or mosquitoes.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
Ability to work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

General Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position.  Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following:  a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Salary

$40,480 - $41,225  per year.

FLSA Status

Exempt.
