Correctional Nurse: Sheriff's Office (0712)

Salary: Annually: $47,558.00 - $54,691.00

Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in providing nursing services to County Jail inmates; performs related work as assigned. Shift work, some weekends and evenings required.

Typical duties:

• Assesses inmates' health needs, plans and implements care, and provides ongoing evaluation
• Administers medications and prescribed treatments
• Performs clinical nursing functions including suture removal, wound treatment, and EKGs
• Collects inmate history, medical records and prescription data
• Monitors daily medical needs and coordinates with multi-disciplinary team
• Participates in prevention and control of communicable diseases
• Collects forensic specimens
• Provides education and counseling as needed by the individual
• Prepares and maintains individual case records and program reports

Essential functions of this position include: standing and walking to make rounds, etc; vision acuity (near & far); working with and around other staff members, detention officers and inmates; dealing with interruptions; communicating with staff and inmates; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation with peers and inmates.

Minimum qualifications:

Must possess a current Arizona RN license, and current CPR certification; OR, any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Must successfully pass a background investigation and polygraph.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must submit to a background search and successfully pass polygraph examination. Must not have a felony conviction within previous ten years or dishonorable discharge from the military. Must not have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence within previous five years. Must not have used marijuana within twelve months of hire or dangerous or narcotic drugs in the past five years for more than experimentation.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of :
- Principles and practices of clinical nursing
- Principles and practices of corrections operations
- Communicable disease and chronic disease prevention

• Working knowledge of:
- Symptoms and treatment protocols for a wide range of chronic conditions, including HIV, hypertension, diabetes, drug/alcohol abuse, etc.
- Medical, surgical and psychiatric/mental health
- Correctional security procedures and systems

• Skill in:
- Health assessment, planning and implementation of appropriate treatment
- Assessing and managing medical-surgical and mental health issues in inmate population
- Use of medical instruments and laboratory equipment
- Clinical service practices
- Critical thinking in stressful situations
- Providing health education and counseling
- Conducting needs assessment
- Use of computers and applicable software

• Ability to:
- Work in a correctional setting
- Exercise initiative and judgment in selecting appropriate nursing interventions
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations
- Work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays
- Identify clients in need of services without referrals
- Prepare complete and accurate records and reports
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
