Communicable Disease Investigator: Health District

Salary: Hourly: $19.53 - $20.51
Note: This position is a limited appointment for twelve months or less. This position is 37 hours per week. Under general supervision performs work of considerable difficulty such as epidemiological investigations and provides preventative education related to communicable diseases; performs related work as assigned.
Typical duties:
• Plans, implements and evaluates preventative education activities
• Provides preventative counseling for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases and communicable diseases
• Provides communicable disease current practices information to labs and health providers
• Interviews infected clients to elicit contacts and notifies them about their exposure
• Ensures that infected clients and their contacts see a health provider for examination and appropriate treatment
• Conducts epidemiological investigations, disease surveillance and monitoring;
• Supervises interns and volunteers
• Maintains and documents case records
• Receives and enters data for disease and lab reports
• Performs laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, microscopy and other communicable disease testing that is allowed under MD/NP standing orders
• Accepts and gives appropriate referrals
• Educates and councils clients, families and the community in health promotion, disease prevention activities and management
• Performs other duties as assigned
Essential functions of this position include: working with and around others; vision acuity (near) for client physical assessment; vision acuity (far) and color vision for driving; communicating with staff, clients, etc.; finger dexterity.
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a biology, counseling, health education or closely related field and two years of experience as an investigator, counselor or educator; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability perform the duties of the position.
This position is exempt from overtime.
Preferences: Accuracy and attention to detail, experience and/or knowledge of communicable diseases, research skills, excellent interpersonal skills.

- The cause, spread and control of communicable diseases
- Arizona Administrative Codes and the Arizona Department of Health Services guidelines for surveillance and investigation of communicable diseases
• Working knowledge of:
- Interviewing and counseling techniques
- Epidemiology
- Crisis intervention
- Medical community and community resources
- Networks and dynamics of the local community
• Skill in:
- Counseling and educating
• Ability to:
- Maintain a nonjudgmental attitude
- Maintain strict client confidentiality;
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
